Sometimes the heavens may feel closed. Sometimes a nap may feel more important than attending church. Both of these feelings are ones Elder Dale G. Renlund felt in his early family life, which he shares as part of the “How I Hear Him” series. Recalling an experience he had as a young medical resident, Elder Renlund knew he could have hurried to complete his tasks at the hospital and make it home for church. Instead, he chose to stall so by the time he made it home his wife and daughter would already be gone for church and he could take a much-desired nap.

When I received my temple endowment, I wasn’t as prepared as I should have been. As is the case for some young adults, I had recently switched wards, and, as a result, hadn’t taken a temple preparation class. I also had heard some misinformation about the temple that made me nervous. In short, I didn’t have the greatest experience when I first participated in the intiatory and endowment ordinances in the temple. Fortunately, my parents encouraged me to go back, and after a few more visits to the temple, I loved it, and felt its spiritual power.

Once again, general conference has come and gone, and members of the Church are left with the words of prophets and apostles of the Lord who expressed key fundamentals for sharing the gospel. These fundamentals included: gaining a larger view of the plan of salvation, possessing a sound understanding of the scriptures, and sharing without a contentious spirit. In addition, authorities counseled against trying to prove the gospel’s truth; however, they urged members to work diligently to spread the message of the Restoration so it can be heard above those who misrepresent LDS beliefs.

Al was told in a priesthood blessing, right when we got married, that the temple should be our centerpiece. A centerpiece is pretty self-explanatory: it is placed in the center and everything else is placed and works around it. In that same blessing, we were told that we should have a picture of a temple in every room of our house, even the bathrooms, to help us be mindful of the temple when we weren’t inside its walls. With the help of Deseret Book and pass-along cards, we listened.
