For many members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, general conference weekend is one of the most exciting and inspiring times of the year. Every April and October, Church leaders gather in Salt Lake City, Utah, and address the worldwide Church on matters involving faith, change, and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Here are GIFs that perfectly explain our conference experience.
BYU President Kevin J. Worthen and his wife, Peggy Seale Worthen, spoke at a recent BYU devotional on "The Pursuit of Truth," and it could not have come at a better time
Before marrying Marjorie, even President Hinckley had some concerns about his personal financial situation. We can all take comfort from his and his wife’s faith to move forward, no matter the circumstance, and to trust that the Lord would provide. The following is a brief excerpt from the book, Courtships of the Prophets: From Childhood Sweethearts to Love at First Sight, by Mary Jane Woodger and Paulette Preston Yates:
"No matter how many times my mind takes me back to that horrible life altering moment, it is not all darkness. Because you reached out to help, you offered a ray of light in the bleakest moment I’ve ever endured," Deborah Greene wrote in a letter to the strangers at Whole Foods who surrounded her, supported her, and loved her after she learned of her father's suicide.
As we approach Pioneer Day, our thoughts often turn to those pioneers who have come before us. One such pioneer was Susanna Stone Lloyd, who at age 25 was the only member of her family to make the journey to Zion.
As a friend of Sister Oaks noted: "Nursery children do not look to see if you have a ring on your finger as you wipe away their tears. It doesn’t take a wedding license to feed hungry Scouts or missionaries or shut-ins. Nowhere on the tithing slip do you indicate marital status as you contribute to the Church’s humanitarian service or Perpetual Education Fund. And they don’t have two doors at the temple — one for couples and one for singles. We are a Church that needs faithful workers. I’ve been blessed because I had priesthood leaders who knew this."
Occasionally I get a letter from a concerned parent about their child in a gay relationship or leaving their Christian faith. Often these parents are paralyzed with fear. Fear of condoning or accepting immoral behavior yet fear of losing their child to choices the parent disagrees with. Based on correspondence with these parents, I feel many in the name of “truth and righteousness” draw their swords only to find it turned into a tragic event that was avoidable.
