Anyone with a smattering of knowledge about the New Testament knows that the English word apostle is derived from a Greek word meaning "messenger," specifically a special messenger or envoy. In the early Church the word was used in several ways. Indeed, the use of the word after Paul appears to have been more ambiguous than it was in the early Church (Anchor Bible Dictionary, s.v. apostle). Mormon usage of the term is in line with one of the common New Testament meanings. According to 2 Peter 3:2, the work of the apostles was to convey the teachings of the prophets and of Jesus to the Church. Jude understands the apostles themselves also to be prophets, those who speak the words of Jesus Christ. But perhaps the definition in Acts 1:21-22, as someone who was with Christ throughout his ministry, is the most relevant for Latter-day Saints.
For the first time America has two Mormon candidates for president, Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman, which has drawn the media’s attention to how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has managed to churn out some of the country’s top business and political leaders. The spotlight has turned on the Mormons’ Missionary Training Center (MTC) in Provo, Utah, which sends out more than 50,000 Mormon graduates around the world at any given moment. Recent media reports say almost all Mormons who have excelled in business and public life have been trained at MTC.

To be an ensign or banner to the nations of the earth, the Lord’s church must first become visible and known to the nations of the earth. This process of becoming visible to move the work of God forward among all the people of earth was part of President Hinckley’s work. This work started while on his mission and continued to the day of his death.

Sadly for BYU fans, Walker recently announced he would forego his senior season and join a professional running team.
