An informal survey from one of the Church historians found that almost no one could name five women from Church history. (Can you? I could, barely!) So, when Bethany and I wanted to do a book about Church history women, we had a lot of research to do. (Thank goodness for the learned and gracious church historians who were a fountain of knowledge— and good humor!) The exciting thing for me was not just learning their names but seeing all the astounding things these women accomplished.
One evening Lydia [Knight] requested me (Newel Knight) to go to the Prophet and get a handkerchief from him, or ask him to send her a healing blessing. And, said [Lydia], “I believe I shall be healed.” She would have been glad to have sent for him to come and lay hands upon her, but did not feel worthy to trouble him . . . as the multitude of business and care he had over the Church she knew was more than he was able to endure with the sufferings of the saints.

“Bula!” While it may be Fiji’s overwhelming humidity that hits you first, it’s the wide smiles and friendly faces that stay with you. On this island, where paradise consists of blankets of greenery and sandy beaches leading into pristine, aqua waters, happy members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints abound—Saints who choose to put the gospel before everything else.

My mom made me wear a dress to the middle school spelling bee. It had pink flowers all over, a bow in the back, and puffy sleeves. I consented because—truth be told—I was totally psyched for this day. One of my favorite movies back then was a made-for-TV Disney film called The Girl Who Spelled Freedom, about a Cambodian refugee who overcame a lot to become a spelling champion (in a dressy outfit).
We need missionaries to match our message. We need missionaries who really know and love the Book of Mormon, who have a burning testimony of its divinity, and who by the Spirit can challenge their investigators to read and ponder its pages, knowing with complete assurance that the Lord will manifest the truth of the Book of Mormon to them by the power of the Holy Ghost. There's nothing quite like going to a different country and trying new culinary delicacies, even though they may have eyes, toenails, or tentacles still attached.
