MR says: What an inspiring story of overcoming an addiction of something we are also dependent on: food. For more information on overcoming food addiction through the gospel, click here.
Elder Gong presented important guiding principles, which were all approved by the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
More than 200 deliveries of food to local pantries across the state of New York were made by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2020 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The gospel was given to Adam and Eve when, “after many days” of sacrificing, “an angel of the Lord appeared unto Adam” and taught him the plan of salvation (Moses 5:6–9). Adam and Eve joyfully embraced it and taught it to their children (see Moses 5:10–12). But “Satan came among them, saying: . . . Believe it not; . . . and men began from that time forth to be carnal, sensual, and devilish” (Moses 5:13). The gospel entails a definite pattern or style of life best defined as the opposite of “carnal, sensual, and devilish.” One of the charges or responsibilities connected with adherence to the gospel is reiterated in the “Olive Leaf” revelation: “Organize yourselves; . . . establish a house, even a house of prayer. . . . Therefore, cease from all your light speeches, from all laughter, from all your lustful desires, from all your pride and light-mindedness, and from all your wicked doings” (D&C 88:119, 121).
As I reflect on the new year, something significant has come to my realization: I have no idea what I’m doing with my life…but God sure does. A year ago I was enjoying the severe winds and frozen tundra-like climate that is Rexburg, Idaho. I had just been endowed a few weeks prior (another thing I didn’t think I would do for a long time). I was serving as the Director of Communication for an organization I loved. This position was an absolute dream to me. It was something I had been hoping and praying to be offered for years. I was absolutely sure Winter 2014 was gonna be MY TERM.

“You know it’s wrong, right?” Yes, they know. And yes, they already feel bad about it. Saying something along these lines will only make them feel more ashamed of their weakness. G. Sheldon Martin, author of Helping Others Avoid and Overcome Pornography, says, “If individuals are going to make it through this challenge, they cannot bear the weight of constant shame. People do not improve when they feel there is nothing to fight for. For true repentance to occur, people must feel godly sorrow. We need to allow that sorrow to happen so the Lord can work within them. Don’t kick them while they’re down.”
The Lord commanded Adam and Eve to multiply and replenish the earth and to not partake of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. How do we resolve this apparent contradiction?
For the bulk of mankind, death is a necessary event that is meant to strengthen and test our faith in the Almighty. Death is rarely a sweet and peaceful experience for all involved. There is usually someone who is party to a death that suffers at least the anguish of loss over the loved one, even if the person dying is at peace with the process.
