After countless miracles leading to the people of Israel leaving bondage, the Lord continued to bless his people in the wilderness. They received food and water, and deliverance from their enemies. As we study Exodus 14–18 look for how God supports us, as we sustain our faith.
Segment 1
Scriptures:
Exodus 14:13-14 (Fear not, the Lord fights for you)
Words of the General Authorities:
As you study your scriptures during the next six months, I encourage you to make a list of all that the Lord has promised He will do for covenant Israel. I think you will be astounded! Ponder these promises. Talk about them with your family and friends. Then live and watch for these promises to be fulfilled in your own life. (Russell M. Nelson, “Let God Prevail”, October 2020 General Conference)
Segment 2
Scriptures:
Exodus 12:33 (The Egyptians chased the children of Israel)
Exodus 14:8 (The Israelites celebrated)
Exodus 12:37 (The number of the Israelites)
Exodus 14:14 (Hold your peace)
Words of the General Authorities:
As we seek to be disciples of Jesus Christ, our efforts to hear Him need to be ever more intentional. It takes conscious and consistent effort to fill our daily lives with His words, His teachings, His truths. (Russell M. Nelson, “Hear Him”, April 2020 General Conference)
I entreat you to study prayerfully all the truths you can find about priesthood power. You might begin with Doctrine and Covenants sections 84 and 107. Those sections will lead you to other passages. The scriptures and teachings by modern prophets, seers, and revelators are filled with these truths. As your understanding increases and as you exercise faith in the Lord and His priesthood power, your ability to draw upon this spiritual treasure that the Lord has made available will increase. (Russell M. Nelson, “Spiritual Treasures”, October 2019 General Conference)
Translations:
Hold your peace - charash = Be deaf to the voices around you, be still; or plow forward (Hebrew)
Segment 3
Scriptures:
D&C 8:2-3 (Spirit of revelation)
Exodus 14:10-12 (Fear of the Israelites)
Exodus 14:16 (Parting of the Red Sea)
Moses 1:25 (Moses shall be mightier than waters)
Exodus 14:29-31 (The Lord saved Israel)
Words of the General Authorities:
Revelation almost always comes in response to a question, usually an urgent question—not always, but usually. In that sense it does provide information, but it is urgently needed information, special information. Moses’ challenge was how to get himself and the children of Israel out of this horrible predicament they were in…You will need information, too, but in matters of great consequence it is not likely to come unless you want it urgently, faithfully, humbly. (Jeffrey R. Holland, “Cast Not Away Therefore Your Confidence”, BYU Speeches delivered on March 2, 1999)
After you have gotten the message, after you have paid the price to feel his love and hear the word of the Lord, “go forward.” Don’t fear, don’t vacillate, don’t quibble, don’t whine. You may, like Alma going to Ammonihah, have to find a route that leads an unusual way, but that is exactly what the Lord was doing here for the children of Israel. Nobody had ever crossed the Red Sea this way, but so what? There’s always a first time. With the spirit of revelation, dismiss your fears and wade in with both feet. (Jeffrey R. Holland, “Cast Not Away Therefore Your Confidence”, BYU Speeches delivered on March 2, 1999)
Before I would write, I would ponder this question: “Have I seen the hand of God reaching out to touch us or our children or our family today?” As I kept at it, something began to happen. As I would cast my mind over the day, I would see evidence of what God had done for one of us that I had not recognized in the busy moments of the day. (Henry B. Eyring, “O Remember, Remember”, October 2007 General Conference)
Segment 4
Scriptures:
Exodus 15:1-18 (Song of the Sea, by Moses and Miriam)
Exodus 14:3 (The Israelites were entangled)
Exodus 19:5 (Peculiar treasure)
Words of the General Authorities:
Whatever Jesus lays his hands upon lives. If Jesus lays his hands upon a marriage, it lives. If he is allowed to lay his hands on the family, it lives. (Howard W. Hunter, “Reading the Scriptures”, October 1979 General Conference)
Music:
I know that my Redeemer lives.
What comfort this sweet sentence gives!
He lives, he lives, who once was dead.
He lives, my ever-living Head.
He lives to bless me with his love.
He lives to plead for me above.
He lives my hungry soul to feed.
He lives to bless in time of need.
(“I Know That My Redeemer Lives”, Hymns #136)
Hope of Israel, rise in might
With the sword of truth and right;
Sound the war-cry, “Watch and pray!”
Vanquish ev’ry foe today.
(“Hope of Israel”, Hymns #259)
The Lord is my light;
He is my joy and my song.
By day and by night
He leads, he leads me along.
(“The Lord Is My Light”, Hymns #89)
I can do all things
With the Savior by my side.
I can climb to greater heights,
Find the strength I need.
I can do all things with Christ.
(“I Can Do All Things Through Christ”, arranged by Mitch Davis and Nik Day for Strive to Be Music)
Translations:
Mercy - hesed = mercy or loving kindness (Hebrew)
Peculiar - segullah = valued property, treasure (Hebrew)
Segment 5
Scriptures:
Exodus 16:3-5 (Oh that we were back in Egypt)
Exodus 16:12 (Filled with bread)
Exodus 16:19 (Everyone needs God’s mana)
Matthew 15:35-38 (Christ gives thanks before the miracle)
D&C 59:21 (Confess God’s hand in all things)
Exodus 16:22 (Prepare for the Sabbath)
Words of the General Authorities:
If you are struggling, confused, or spiritually lost, I urge you to do the one thing I know will get you back on track. Begin again to prayerfully study the Book of Mormon and live its teachings every day, every day, every day! I testify of the profound power in the Book of Mormon that will change your life and strengthen your resolve to follow Christ. (Kevin W. Pearson, “Stay by the Tree”, April 2015 General Conference)
Segment 6
Scriptures:
Exodus 17:2-3 (More murmuring)
Exodus 17:6 (Moses smites the rock for water)
Exodus 17:8-16 (Moses hands are sustained in the fight with Amalek)
Deuteronomy 1:2 (They were 11 days distance)
James 1:22 (Be doers of the word)
Romans 8:18 (Suffering can’t compare to glory)
Words of the General Authorities:
So faith in Jesus Christ is a bond of trust forged in loyalty and love. In other words, in gratitude for God’s merciful love (hesed), we show our loyal love (emunah) by keeping His commandments. (Sandino Roman, “Faith: A Bond of Trust and Loyalty”, April 2025 General Conference)
Quotes:
This idea of support for the word emunah can be seen in Exodus 17:12. … It is the support/emunah of Aaron and Hur that held [up] Moses’ arms, not the support/emunah of Moses. When we say, ‘I have faith in God,’ we should be thinking, ‘I will do what I can to support God’ (Jeff A. Benner, “Faith,” Ancient Hebrew Research Center, ancient-hebrew.org as recorded in Footnote 20 by Sandino Roman, “Faith: A Bond of Trust and Loyalty”, April 2025 General Conference)
Translations:
Steady - emunah = Action oriented word meaning support, faith, loyal love (Hebrew)
Study Helps:
Faith is a principle of action and of power, and by it one can command the elements, heal the sick, and influence any number of circumstances when occasion warrants. Even more important, by faith one obtains a remission of sins and eventually can stand in the presence of God. (“Faith”, Bible Dictionary)
