Next week, President Russell M. Nelson will celebrate his 101st birthday on September 9, 2025. Reflecting on over a century of life, the prophet recently penned an op-ed for the global publication Time magazine.

“The world has changed dramatically,” President Nelson wrote. “Yet what I have learned is that some truths do not change. These enduring truths are what anchor us in turbulent times.”

In the essay, the Church leader shared two truths that he has learned contribute to lasting happiness and peace:

  1. Each person has inherent worth, and we all deserve dignity.
  2. We should treat others with love, compassion, and respect.

“Life can be terrifying, and I have watched many—especially young people—struggle with anxiety about whether they belong or have value,” he wrote. “But a heart that knows it is loved and remains focused on its purpose beats with steadiness, confidence, and hope no matter what is happening—or not happening—in life.”

The prophet testified that as we recognize our collective divine worth and exemplify empathy, we can become forces for good within our homes and communities and build “bridges of understanding.” These principles align with the Second Great Commandment, as taught by Jesus Christ.

“My faith teaches me that over two millennia ago, Jesus Christ preached these same laws of happiness: to love God and to love our neighbor,” President Nelson wrote. “After 101 years, I can say that these are not abstract theological ideas—they are practical wisdom. They are what have sustained me through loss and triumph, uncertainty, peace, war, and healing.”
