The Blessings of Willing Obedience: a Martin Handcart Story

Isaac John Wardle began working in the coal mines in Ravenstone, England, at the tender age of 7 — six days a week, 12 hours a day. That would have been his destiny until he heard the gospel preached, joined the LDS Church at age 17 and determined to emigrate and gather with the Saints in the Utah basin. After three years of scrimping and saving, Wardle booked passage on the ship Horizon, said a final farewell to his family and sailed from Liverpool in May 1856. After disembarking in Boston on June 30, 1856, Wardle climbed aboard a train, eventually arriving in Iowa City, Iowa.

The Mormon Church’s press office is allowing itself a brief sigh of relief. “Overall we’re relatively pleased,” Michael Otterson, the head of worldwide public affairs for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said in his office on the eve of Election Day. “Plenty of exceptions, but we are relatively pleased that we got through this campaign without the church being dragged into the middle of politics.”

Temple groud breaking in Tijuana, Mexico

Breaking ground, whether for a new crop of corn or a new temple, is an act of faith. And on Saturday, Aug. 18, some 2,000 Latter-day Saints gathered in East Tijuana to dedicate the site of a new temple and turn the soil again with hope.Elder Benjamin De Hoyos of the Seventy and first counselor in the Mexico Area Presidency, presided at the gathering with second counselor, Elder Jose L. Alonso, also of the Seventy, directing. Meanwhile, like the pioneers of old, the LDS faithful stood or sat in the dusty desert sun, fanning themselves as they listened to testimonies, counsel and expressions of gratitude. Colorful umbrellas, to ward away the rays, sprouted here and there like wildflowers.

Breaking the Idea of the Mormon Mold

The way I see missionary work now is this: We have Preach My Gospel, we have the scriptures, the white handbook, and key indicators—all these things that the Apostles gave to us so that we can measure, be effective, and do it how the Lord wants us to bring the gospel to people. This is all like a framework. Scaffolding. These are our boundaries, our frames, how we work. But there NEEDS to be filling. A sidewalk cannot be created without cement. And what goes into that frame, that scaffolding, that filling, that is where we are individual. It is really HOW we connect with people. It is HOW we use our talents and abilities to connect and love and serve the people we are working with.

The music of Disney movies, musicals and theme park attractions has long been a part of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s repertoire. In the above photo, Donald Duck was the guest con-duck-tor of the Choir back in 1988, where he led them in singing “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” during a rehearsal. Even before that, the Choir released an album titled, When You Wish Upon A Star, which was a tribute to Walt Disney.
