Doctrine and Covenants section 76 contains a vision answering the great question of mortality: “What happens after we die?” The answer doesn’t have to be complicated with diagrams; it is as simple as understanding that God loves us. And that inexhaustible love reaches to all of God’s creations.

Segment 1

Scriptures:
D&C 76:2-5 (God’s ways are marvelous)
D&C 38:22 (God is the law)

Segment 2

Scriptures:
D&C 76:15-17 (The question of resurrection)
John 5:29 (Resurrection for all)

Words of the General Authorities:
From modern revelation we know that the ultimate destiny of all who live on the earth is not the inadequate idea of heaven for the righteous and the eternal sufferings of hell for the rest. God’s loving plan for His children includes this reality taught by our Savior, Jesus Christ: “In my Father’s house are many mansions.” (Dallin H. Oaks, “Kingdoms of Glory”, October 2023 General Conference)

Translations:
Mercy - hesed = God’s lovingkindness

Segment 3

Scriptures:
D&C 76:5-7 (Mercy and good pleasure)
D&C 76:23-24 (Begotten sons and daughters)
D&C 76:1 (Jesus is the ONLY way)

Words of the General Authorities:
If men do not comprehend the character of God, they do not comprehend themselves. (Joseph Smith, “King Follett Sermon”, as recorded in Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith, Chapter 2: God the Eternal Father; and josephsmithpapers.com, different versions found here)

Segment 4

Scriptures:
D&C 14:7 (Eternal life is the greatest gift)
D&C 76:60 (Overcome all things)
D&C 76:69 (Complete through Christ)
D&C 76:94 (Receive His grace)
D&C 88:32-33 (Enjoy what you will receive)
D&C 76:71-77,82,86 (Receive not)

Words of the General Authorities:
Brothers and sisters, mortality works! It is designed to work! Despite the challenges, heartaches, and difficulties we all face, our loving, wise, and perfect Heavenly Father has designed the plan of happiness such that we are not destined to fail. His plan provides a way for us to rise above our mortal failures. (Brook P. Hales, “Mortality Works!”, October 2024 General Conference)

Receiving a gift is not passive but an intentional and meaningful process that goes far beyond merely opening a package. To receive is to appreciate and connect with both the gift and the heart of the giver in a way that strengthens the bonds between the giver and receiver. Thinking of that toy car brings back a host of golden memories, as I feel once again my father’s deep love and care for me, represented by that gift and countless other generous acts. (Patrick Kearon, “Receive His Gift”, April 2025 General Conference)

Jesus Christ loves each of us. He offers that opportunity to draw closer to Him. As with a loving friend, you will do it in much the same way, by communicating through prayer to Heavenly Father in the name of Jesus Christ, listening for cherished guidance from the Holy Ghost, and then serving others for the Savior cheerfully. Soon you would feel that blessing of drawing nearer to Him. (Henry B. Eyring, “Draw Near unto Me”, April 2025 General Conference)

Segment 5

Scriptures:
D&C 76:12-14 (Eyes were opened to a vision)
D&C 76:15-24 (The good that Joseph saw)
D&C 76:57-59 (Becoming the children of God)

Words of the General Authorities:
Listen for that voice that says good things about you—the voice of the Savior, your finest friend, and your Father in Heaven, who is really there. Remember, Their love and your worth are always great, no matter what! (Tamara W. Runia, “Your Repentance Doesn’t Burden Jesus Christ; It Brightens His Joy”, April 2025 General Conference)

A teacher … should surely have so much of the Spirit of the Lord, as she enters a house to know what spirit she meets in there. … Plead before God and the Holy Ghost to get [the Spirit] so that you will be able to meet that spirit that prevails in that house … and you may feel to talk words of peace and comfort, and if you find a sister feeling cold, take her to your heart as you would a child to your bosom and warm [her] up. (Eliza R. Snow, in Mt. Pleasant North Ward Relief Society Minutes, as recorded in Daughters in My Kingdom, Chapter 7: “Pure Religion”)

Those who do not fully understand the Father’s loving plan for His children may consider this family proclamation no more than a changeable statement of policy. In contrast, we affirm that the family proclamation, founded on irrevocable doctrine, defines the mortal family relationship where the most important part of our eternal development can occur. (Dallin H. Oaks, “Kingdoms of Glory”, October 2023 General Conference)

Segment 6

Scriptures:
D&C 76:27 (Satan fell!)
2 Nephi 2:11 (Opposition in all things)
1 Nephi 8:24 (Clinging to the rod of iron)
D&C 76:25-49 (Those who don’t choose God)
D&C 76:39-42 (All may be saved)
Moses 1:39 (Bringing immortality and eternal life)

Words of the General Authorities:
Contention prevents the Holy Ghost from being our constant companion. (Russell M. Nelson, “Confidence in the Presence of God”, April 2025 General Conference)

However late you think you are, however many chances you think you have missed, however many mistakes you feel you have made or talents you think you don’t have, or however far from home and family and God you feel you have traveled, I testify that you have not traveled beyond the reach of divine love. It is not possible for you to sink lower than the infinite light of Christ’s Atonement shines. (Jeffrey R. Holland, “The Laborers in the Vineyard”, April 2012 General Conference)

Study Helps:
When the vision closed, Sidney looked limp and pale, overcome by what he had seen. Joseph smiled and said, “Sidney is not used to it as I am.” (Saints Volume 1, Chapter 14: Visions and Nightmares)
