Interacting with music, poetry, and scriptures can bring up deeply personal feelings. And the writers of the Psalms shared deeply in their writing. In our study of Psalms 49-86 we are going to look for the personal connection in the writing. And how that will help us set our hope in God.

Segment 1

Scriptures:
Psalm 51:10-12,17 (Clean, contrite, broken hearts)
Psalm 49:15-17 (God redeems from the grave)

Translations:
Saleh = Stop, reflect, rest as in spiritual or musical (Hebrew)

Segment 2

Scriptures:
Psalm 78:9-72 (Children of Israel’s actions with God)

Translations:
Dark = Hidden or in a sarcastic manner (Hebrew)

Segment 3

Scriptures:
Psalm 61:1-4 (God’s protection)
Psalm 86:6-8 (Call unto God)

Words of the General Authorities:
The subject of prayer is one dear to me. I know that prayer can lift the greatest burdens and rest the weary. Nothing else can give such perfect relief. Even the falling of a tear is prayer. There are times in the lives of all when we need extra strength and comfort. Be not discouraged in praying again and again for the same thing. God understands our needs, and he will bless us in his own way. (Ann M. Cannon, “Prayer”, General MIA Conference June 4, 1901, recorded in At the Pulpit: 185 Years of Discourses by Latter-day Saint Women)

Segment 4

Scriptures:
Psalm 78:4 (Showing the next generation God’s wonderful works)
Psalm 51:1 (Tender mercies)
Psalm 63:7-8 (God upholding us)

Segment 5

Scriptures:
Psalm 77:1-3 (Endlessly seeking the Lord)

Words of the General Authorities:
If our lives and our faith are centered on Jesus Christ and his restored gospel, nothing can ever go permanently wrong. On the other hand, if our lives are not centered on the Savior and his teachings, no other success can ever be permanently right. (Howard W. Hunter, The Teachings of Howard W. Hunter, ed. Clyde J. Williams)

I wrote down a few lines every day for years. I never missed a day no matter how tired I was or how early I would have to start the next day. Before I would write, I would ponder this question: “Have I seen the hand of God reaching out to touch us or our children or our family today?” As I kept at it, something began to happen. As I would cast my mind over the day, I would see evidence of what God had done for one of us that I had not recognized in the busy moments of the day. (Henry B. Eyring, “O Remember, Remember”, October 2007 General Conference)

Translations:
Complained - siach = Meditated; mused or pondered (Hebrew)
