Episode 23

Ruth and Hannah were strong figures in the Old Testament who demonstrated faith and established a righteous lineage. This week we are paying special attention to what we can learn about God’s pattern of revelation in Ruth and 1 Samuel 1-7. Sometimes the Lord asks hard things, but when we know it comes from God, it makes it worth it to obey.

Segment 1

Words of the General Authorities:
I urge you to stretch beyond your current spiritual ability to receive personal revelation. (Russell M. Nelson, “Revelation for the Church, Revelation for Our Lives”, April 2018 General Conference)

Obed = Servant or serving one (Hebrew)
Nurse - aman = To bring up, to be faithful, to be reliable (Hebrew)

Segment 3

Scriptures:
Ruth 2:1 (Naomi’s kinsman)
2 Nephi 4:33 (The robe of righteousness)

Translations:
Kinsman - go’el = Redeemer (Hebrew)

Segment 4

1 Samuel 2:8 (God raiseth the poor out of the dust)

Segment 5

1 Samuel 1:27-28 (Lending your child to the Lord)
1 Samuel 2:19 (Hannah visits Samuel in the temple)
1 Samuel 1:17-18 (Hannah’s faith)
Isaiah 61:3 (Beauty for ashes)

Words of the General Authorities:
As I matured and began to understand the magnificence of Heavenly Father’s plan, I often said to myself, “I don’t want one more Christmas present! I just want to be sealed to my parents.” That longed-for event did not happen until my parents were past 80, and then it did happen. I cannot fully express the joy that I felt that day, and each day I feel that joy of their sealing and my being sealed to them. (Russell M. Nelson, “Revelation for the Church, Revelation for Our Lives”, April 2018 General Conference)

Segment 6

Scriptures:
1 Samuel 1:11-12 (Hannah pleas for a son)
1 Samuel 2:1-10 (Hannah praises God)
1 Samuel 3:1 (The word of the Lord was scarce)
1 Samuel 3:3-11 (Samuel hears the voice of the Lord)

Words of the General Authorities:
I know that good inspiration is based upon good information.

Pray in the name of Jesus Christ about your concerns, your fears, your weaknesses—yes, the very longings of your heart. And then listen! Write the thoughts that come to your mind. Record your feelings and follow through with actions that you are prompted to take. As you repeat this process day after day, month after month, year after year, you will “grow into the principle of revelation.”

Nothing opens the heavens quite like the combination of increased purity, exact obedience, earnest seeking, daily feasting on the words of Christ in the Book of Mormon, and regular time committed to temple and family history work.

Continue to be obedient, expressing gratitude for every blessing the Lord gives you, and as you patiently honor the Lord’s timetable.

Choose to do the spiritual work required to enjoy the gift of the Holy Ghost and hear the voice of the Spirit more frequently and more clearly.

Jamaica is to me like Palmyra was to Joseph Smith. It is my Sacred Grove. I do not know the exact spot where Joseph knelt to pray in the Sacred Grove, but I know exactly where I was when my Sacred Grove became a reality. It happened at Four Grove Road, Mandeville, Jamaica, in my bathroom, at 6:00 a.m. on a Wednesday three years after my baptism. (Kevin G. Brown, “The Eternal Gift of Testimony”, October 2025 General Conference; emphasis added)

Because Jesus Christ knows all about best days and worst days: suffering so great that an angel was sent to strengthen Him, the betrayal of a good friend, the cross on Calvary. But His story also has a garden, a stone rolled away, and an empty tomb. Because of Him, no matter how bad things are right now, your best days are ahead. (Emily Belle Freeman, “Best Days and Worst Days”, April 2026 General Conference)
