General Conference October 2018

The next two weeks of Come, Follow Me focus on Matthew 16–17, Mark 8–9, and Luke 9. In Matthew 16:13-17, Christ asks His followers, "Whom say ye that I am?" The answer to this question varies based on the revelation we have received of Christ's divine identity. Are you up for the General Conference Challenge?

During the Saturday morning session of the October 2018 general conference, President Russell M. Nelson announced a change to the Church schedule with the aim of strengthening families through a home-centered and Church-supported plan. Although the announced schedule is new, the desire for home-centered and Church-supported gospel learning may not be as new as you think.

More and more it seems the Church and our leaders are focusing on simplifying programs, meetings, and reports to focus on the core of the gospel. To me, the overall message seems to be that, no matter our age, we won't be babied or shepherded through membership in the Church. Instead, we have the opportunity to embrace our discipleship, rely on our Savior and receive His grace, and pursue exaltation and the divinity within us, with the loving support of the Church and its members behind us to catch us when we fall.

While you might think organizing, conducting, and speaking at a two-day worldwide conference broadcast to millions around the world in over 40 languages would be the enough to keep our Church leaders occupied this past weekend, that wasn't the case. They also met with senior leaders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) on Friday, October 5, and Saturday, October 6, 2018.

Nothing quite captures the emotions, excitement, and feel of general conference like a perfectly timed photograph. While announcements about new temples, Church, and home-centered gospel study are exciting, the most thrilling part of this past general conference weekend for me was listening to the men and women Heavenly Father has chosen to lead His Church today. It was painstakingly clear to me that each person who stood at the pulpit relied on revelation and their Savior to be able to say the words we needed to hear at this time we need them more than ever.

This general conference has been historic in many ways. And with so many exciting, new changes, you might have missed a few. Here's a roundup of all the changes that were announced during this conference weekend.

When President M. Russell Ballard stepped up to the pulpit on Sunday morning, he revealed that the talk he would proceed to give was prepared before his wife’s passing on October 1, 2018, after battling many health problems, including Alzheimer's.

For the first time in nearly 40 years, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is making a change in its Sunday meeting schedule.

President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency announced the following changes to Church leadership at the Saturday afternoon session of the 188th Semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Latter-day Saint social media world was rocked during the Saturday morning session of general conference when Elder Quentin L. Cook announced that weekly church meetings will now be two hours to help members and families focus on home gospel study.

During the Saturday morning session of the 188th Semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Church announced changes to weekly Church meetings, including that church meetings will now be two hours instead of three.
