Before President Russell M. Nelson’s challenge to turn social media into our own gratitude journals, there were dozens of lists online of things to be grateful for in the year 2020. Since his invitation, millions of ideas have been added by those using #GiveThanks. But there are a few spiritual things that I think we have become more grateful for this year, as we have either relied on them more or had to do without them. Everyone’s list will look a little different depending on personal circumstances, but here are a few things that I think many of us have come to appreciate more than ever this year (in no particular order).

Each November, as the air turns from crisp to chill and pumpkins on front porches are replaced with evergreen wreaths, the excitement of the season starts to settle in. Just before the hustle and bustle takes over, there is a small window where we can simply soak in the anticipation of all that is to come and relish in the nostalgia of holidays past. It is a season of gathering: heads bowed in unison as prayers of thanks are offered over turkey dinners and extra slices of pecan pie, familiar carols sung a bit off-key with those you love most, and the hope and peace that come from setting aside differences and distractions to worship together in honor of the Christ child.

Can you remember hearing the phrase "enough is enough" in your life? Maybe we don't use it as much as we once did, but I can remember hearing it quite a lot when I was younger. It usually meant, "Stop it! Quit it!" We'd be quarreling or screaming or throwing silverware or whatever, and Mom would say, "Enough is enough!" What might that little phrase mean in terms of "stuff and things"? To have enough is to be satisfied. It's a point at which you consciously realize you have what you need, and you stop wanting, working, and whining for more.

It’s easy to get stuck saying routine prayers with repeated words and phrases. It’s hard not to when you pray every day, even multiple times a day, and it becomes a part of your everyday life. For many Latter-day Saints, learning how to pray is one of the first things you do as a small child. As soon as a child can speak in clear words and small sentences, loving parents help them say their own prayers and teach them the importance of communicating with God on a regular basis.

When the first company of Saints arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, it was uncertain if crops could be grown in the high, dry climate. Relying on their faith, however, the early pioneers pressed forward, surviving on edible plants and small game until the spring. They quickly set to work planting their crops, which began to sprout up and bring hope to the Saints. However, their hope quickly changed to concern as frost, crickets, and drought quickly destroyed their budding plants.

On Thanksgiving Day, elders and sisters at missionary training centers around the world feasted spiritually on words of counsel from an Apostle and his wife. Later that day, at the Provo MTC, missionaries helped nourish others physically as they packed ingredients for 350,000 meals to be distributed to the needy through the Utah Food Bank. “Teaching and baptizing lead to thanksgiving that never ends,” declared Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in the live broadcast emanating from the missionary training center in Provo. His talk followed one given by his wife, Sister Wendy Nelson, who counseled the missionaries to put away childish things.

As we approach the beginning of the holiday season, I gear up for a busy time of couples counseling. There always seems to be an influx of couples coming to see me for counseling help after Thanksgiving and Christmas. These holidays can test family relationships, strain finances, and highlight the lengthy winter that lies ahead. However, couples can combat some of these tendencies and strengthen their relationships through the holidays. One of the best ways is to help your spouse realize how thankful you are for them.
