150 Latter-day Saint youth and leaders will be wearing the standard pioneer bonnets, bandannas, and wide-brimmed hats and pulling the usual handcarts. But the location of this trek perhaps isn’t what first comes to mind: it's a 5,000-acre Church-owned farm in Argentina.

While no two treks are ever the same, most Church members who have been on one will recognize these 10 people amongst their trek families.

Most Church members today don’t realize the depth of mistrust and resentment some Mormon pioneers harbored toward the United States in 1846 and 1847. When the Mormons arrived in the Great Basin, they were actually arriving in northern Mexico. They purposely crossed an international border and were fleeing the United States.

Pioneer treks are a common summer activity for Church members around the world, allowing them to experience, if even partially, the challenges the earliest pioneers faced in searching for religious freedom in the 1800s. Opportunities abound to learn how suffering and sacrifice brings one close to the Savior. Walking in the pioneers’ footsteps, participants can feel empathy for those who heeded the call to gather to Zion.

Ahhh trek. That Mormon right of passage that no one can successfully explain to people who haven't had this unique experience. Yes, we pack up handcarts, don bonnets and wide-brimmed hats, and walk across the desert. But there's so much more to trek than that.

Forbes recently published an article about the new Mormon movie Trek which came out in theaters on April 6. The author, Frank Miniter, says that the film is "a narrative feature film that follows a group of Mormon teens who all agreed to hand over their phones to go on a trek," and that it's "worth a look" because "it focuses in on the real experiences our teens need . . . to help them grow into mature, happy adults."

The LDS Film Festival is well underway with events and showings beginning Monday, February 26th, and running through Saturday, March 3. From animated videos, short films, and full-length movies, the festival offers an array of options for film aficionados.

When the Mr. and I were called back in February to be a “ma” and “pa” for our Stake Trek, I remember thinking, “Perfect. That’s nearly 5 months to get myself physically ready. Plenty of time to prepare.”

This was a rut I was grateful to be stuck in one crisp, blue-sky morning in western Wyoming. Standing deep in a trough on a sparsely wooded hill overlooking the North Platte River near the outskirts of Guernsey, I felt the earth rumble as oxen mooed, whips cracked, and covered wagons creaked up the steep rutted incline hauling heavy loads of the essentials, and the trivial. Hardened women in bonnets and long skirts followed coughing in the dust, and men in hats on horses yelled at their livestock and encouraged children and the old staggering to keep pace. Among this rolling wave of humanity were hundreds of poor English and Scandinavian Mormons on foot who had no idea what awaited them in October of 1856 as they pushed and pulled two-wheeled carts with bloody hands ever-onward to Zion and the Valley of the Salt Lake for 1,300 tiresome miles in the ultimate test of their faith.

On a recent Friday night when their peers were probably hanging out at the mall or posting on Facebook, some 150 Mormon teens pulled 10,400-pound covered handcarts for seven miles through Connecticut's Mohawk State Forest.
