Why I’m so grateful someone pushed through awkwardness to serve

Church leaders have often spoken about the care and prayer that goes into preparing their talks for general conference.

Standing with the Salt Lake City Temple as a backdrop, Sister Sharon Eubank spoke of a humanitarian partnership to a small crowd of reporters eagerly writing and pushing their microphones closer to capture the sound of her voice on Monday afternoon, Sept. 30.

As we prepare for general conference, here are meaningful messages from last conference that can help us review and come closer to the Spirit. Here is one invitation or promise given by each of the speakers during the April 2019 general conference that might lead you to take action, inspire you to be still and listen, help you prepare for another meaningful conference this weekend, and draw you closer to Christ.

George Potter’s long journey from the Valley of Lemuel to Utah started in 1995 when Craig Thorsted and George located the real Mount Sinai in Arabia. The following day while retracing the saga of Moses, they came upon an amazing valley with a small river of continually flowing water exactly a three-day camel ride into the wilderness (1 Nephi 2:6). George immediately recognized that this must be the Valley of Lemuel. Subsequent visits to the valley proved that the small river and valley contain all the attributes of the valley that Nephi described.

The following is an excerpt from Elder John H. Groberg’s book Fire of Faith, which details his experiences with his family as he served as a mission president in Tonga. During his service, Elder Groberg helped plan a jubilee celebration for the Saints in Tonga and promised the missionaries that, leading up to the jubilee, 500 people would be baptized into the Church in one month. The number seemed impossible. In 1966, the total number of members baptized into the Church for the entire year was 604. In 1967, the number rose to 833, but Elder Groberg understood the Lord was working miracles to move His work forward in Tonga. Below is one of those miracles that helped bring 507 people into the Church in one month in Tonga.
