‘Relief and joy’: Songwriter shares her unexpected reaction to the new Young Women names

The following is a transcript of an interview with the Young Women and Young Men general presidencies discussing the 2020 youth theme “go and do,” which is centered on the scripture 1 Nephi 3:7. (Sister Michelle D. Craigdid not participate in the interview as she was traveling). The following transcript has been edited for length and clarity.

When Daniel Ortner was 18 years old, his faith in God was shattered. "My mom, when I was in high school, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and she passed away shortly after my 18th birthday," Ortner says on a recent NPR podcast. Having grown up in a household where his mother "believed strongly in God" and his dad was "strong in his Jewish heritage," Ortner remembers celebrating Hanukkah, eating homemade latkes, and attending Jewish schools.

Some may remember a story of President Spencer W. Kimball helping a stranded pregnant woman in the airport who was pushing along her young toddler.1 President Kimball comforted the woman, whom he had never met and knew nothing about, gave the little girl a piece of gum, and got the young, pregnant, exhausted mother and her wet and hungry 2-year-old daughter on the next flight out of the Chicago O’Hare airport.

While once we viewed the world only through our two round eyes, now we examine it through thousands of tiny squares, perfectly cropped and curated, through which we look, scroll, admire, and double-tap. I mean, if you did not put it on your Instagram story, did it really happen? If you don’t have a “K” attached to the number beside your name, are you really an influencer? In our society of travel bloggers and “momfluencers,” where anyone and everyone can be a star (as long as the algorithm says you are), are we truly being #authentic?
