“Whatever your level of comfort in singing, you can find joy, peace, and have a closer relationship with God by using your voice to worship through song.”
When I realized this, I felt a type of self-love I’d never experienced before.

There are many roads to success, a fact that Jonathan Johnson, current president of Overstock.com, knows all too well. He did not plan to be a businessman; he wanted to be a successful lawyer like his father, whom he is named after. So, following a bachelor’s in Japanese from Brigham Young University, he attended BYU’s J. Reuben Clark Law School, graduating with his juris doctorate in 1993. “After graduation, I joined a practice in L.A. working for Japanese clients, having served my mission in Japan,” he says.
One of the things I love about Joseph Smith is how young he was when he saw Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. The Father and the Son appearing to a relatively uneducated 14-year-old farm boy isn’t exactly a run-of-the-mill experience. Earlier this month, I drove with my brother, Chris, my sister, Gina, and her husband, Jonathan, to Lincoln, Nebraska, where we all grew up. We went with the middle-aged dream of running the Lincoln Half Marathon to somehow prove to ourselves that we are in the best shape of our lives, literally outrunning age. Well, I’m sure subconsciously that’s what we thought. In reality, we were painfully reminded of our age or, as my sister Gina stated when she stumbled across the finish line at Husker stadium drenched in sweat, “I didn’t respect the miles.” (Also, we forgot about the humidity. Thanks for the reminder, Nebraska.) Middle-aged delusions aside, we just wanted an excuse to “go home.”
My oldest son is a senior in high school and a prototypical quarterback. He is an athletic 6’4, stands tall in the pocket, and has a beautiful left-handed throw that looks effortless. He throws hard, accurate, commands the huddle, reads the defense, has heart, and is an outstanding leader. Perhaps his best quality is that he is very coachable. In short, I look at him from a coaching perspective and salivate that I would have such a quarterback.
If service were a color, what color would it be? Maybe for you it’s a soft green or pastel blue. Perhaps it’s a dazzling purple or vibrant orange. For a very long time, service was always yellow to me because of the bright, sunny way serving makes me feel. Many years ago, a significant experience at Christmastime meant from that time on, service would forever be red.
