In a world where material wealth, fleeting fame, self-obsession, and instant gratification rule the airways and threaten our peace, it can be difficult to determine the real meaning of life. Lehi, a Book of Mormon prophet, taught his son the purpose of this life. Said he, “Men are, that they might have joy” (2 Nephi 2:25). But what is joy and where can we find it? Joy is not temporary pleasure or the absence of pain. Rather, joy is a deep sense of peace and happiness that comes when we understand elements of God’s plan for the destiny of His children.

Me? I am comfortable in my church and in my skin. This is not to say that I am not painfully aware of those who are not. A large part of my life has been spent helping others understand the gospel. I have spent years helping people as they enter, and as some leave, the church. As an LDS social media presence, I am acutely aware of the angst of the age regarding the church – I interact with it every day of my life. Some sincere, some hostile, some heart-breaking.

The Book of Mormon is a collection of inspired writings by prophets who lived on the American continent anciently. The main writer was the prophet Mormon, who abridged other records to compile the volume named for him. He engraved his record on plates of gold, and, many years later, these plates were revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith by an angel in upstate New York.

“There is a great amount of interest in Mormons right now in the UK and Ireland,” said Church leader Elder Clifford Herbertson. “People are asking the question, ‘Who are the Mormons?’ and when people are asking questions, we want to be here to provide them with the answers of how and why we follow Jesus Christ.” “I’m a Mormon” adverts first ran in selected cities in the United States in 2010. A similar campaign to the one running in London was centred in New York City’s Times Square in 2011. Both of these campaigns coincided with the launch of The Book of Mormon Musical in each respective city.

On Dec. 19, Mitt Romney appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman to read “The Top Ten Things Mitt Romney Would Like to Say to the American People.” He gazed into the camera and deadpanned, “Isn’t it time for a President who looks like a 1970s game show host?” He also poked fun at his helmet hair and took a jab at Newt Gingrich. One thing absent from the list: his religion. In speeches, Romney often talks about faith and prayer but rarely mentions that he is a devout Mormon. Perhaps that’s because national polls show many Americans—particularly evangelical Christians he needs to win—know little about the religion and are suspicious of it. A June Gallup poll found that 18 percent of Republicans wouldn’t vote for a Mormon for President.

Is there such a thing as a "Mormon face?" The LDS ad campaign, "I'm a Mormon," seems to think so. A Mormon face may come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors, but it's always fresh, alert, trusting and warm. Just as President Gordon B. Hinckley said the LDS "brand," if you will, could be found in the lives of those who belong to it, the "public face" of Mormonism shows up in the visage of each individual member.
