Mary

We can find the gospel of Mary in 1 Nephi 11. This gospel speaks to her unique perspective as the mother who was called to give birth to the Son of God.

“I wonder what emotions Joseph might have had as he cleared away the dung and debris. I wonder if he felt the sting of tears as he hurriedly tried to find the cleanest straw and hold the animals back.”

Mary is perhaps the most significant mother in all of history. She alone was chosen to be the mother of the only begotten Son, a task that was not only daunting but had significant implications for Mary. As we more fully understand her entire story, not just the moment she became a mother, or even the moment she saw the Savior die on the cross, we can gain a truly remarkable view into the life of this amazing woman.

It all started with the fathers. As with countless Jewish girls, Mary’s betrothal likely began when, by custom, Joseph’s father approached hers. Before Joseph’s father said more than a few words, Mary’s father likely knew what he wanted. To be brief, he wanted to discuss a possible engagement of his son with Mary. That topic would require a somewhat formal meeting.1 Whether Joseph’s father was the first parent to approach Mary’s father we cannot know. It is certainly possible that her father had been approached by other fathers of young men in Nazareth. Mary would surely have been visible to all the fathers in the small town. She may have been one of the few eligible young women that year in a settlement that sat apart, high above the surrounding plains at the top of steep hills that rose near one another and, falling precipitously toward each other, formed a bowl-like setting for Nazareth’s few inhabitants.

Across our worldwide Church, children, youth, and adults are studying Matthew 1 and Luke 1, which tells of the miraculous conception of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. Recently, Daniel Smith of Messages of Christ created a video contrasting these two events, a video that highlights the incredible faith and devotion of Mary, the mother of the Son of God. These insights can add depth to our study of the new Come, Follow Me curriculum and our understanding of New Testament events.

Often when we think of Mary, we think of the young woman willing to trust in God entirely and the mother willing to protect her infant son at all costs.

This Christmas, take some time to consider what we can learn from the mother of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
