Björn Bauerfeind has vivid memories of being a Latter-day Saint in East Germany, where his “faithful parents far behind the Iron Curtain” were serious about serving the Lord in an area where government officials closely watched the Church. Every Sunday, his parents, Dieter and Ilse Bauerfeind, took him, his sister, and two brothers to attend church, about 40 miles (64km) from their home in Stendal. “The Rathenow Branch consisted of 10 Church members, including our family,” said Brother Bauerfeind. “Branch President Ferenz, a 91-year-old man, never missed a single meeting either. Contact with other Church members was very limited due to long distances to other Church units. As a little child, sometimes the thought, ‘What a lonely bunch of Mormons,’ crossed my mind. What I did not realize back then was how many blessings the Lord had in store for us for the future. We would live to see many of the promises made by servants of the Lord become reality.

The public is invited to visit the temple during an open house from 29 September through 20 October 2012, excluding Sundays and Saturday, 6 October. Free reservations for the open house can be made through the www.calgarymormontemple.org website in the coming weeks.

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) has announced open house and dedication dates for the Manaus Brazil Temple. The public is invited to visit the temple during an open house from 18 May through 2 June 2012, excluding Sundays. Tickets are not necessary for this open house. The temple will be formally dedicated on Sunday, 10 June 2012, in three sessions. The dedicatory sessions will be broadcast to congregations of the Church within the temple district.

It was at Liberty, Mo., some six miles slightly northeast of the Kansas temple site, that the Prophet Joseph Smith and several of his Church associates were incarcerated in jail during the winter months of 1838-39.
