The Mormon temple in Kensington will undergo repairs to return the tops of four of its more than 200-foot high spires, which fell off during the Aug. 23 earthquake. Each of the four gold-colored spires lost two, four-foot-long sections off their highest point during the quake, causing minor damage to portions of the temple’s white marble roof, said Wesley Andersen, the temple record. Each piece weighs about 80 to 85 pounds and is made of bronze supported by pressed-steel plates, gilded with gold leaf.

The Church announced Sept. 7 that the Payson Utah Temple groundbreaking will take place on Oct. 8, with Elder Dallin H. Oaks presiding at the 9 a.m. ceremony. The property for the temple is located at approximately 930 West and 1550 South on the southwest side of Payson, a mile from the 800 South I-15 interchange. The new temple will help meet the needs of a growing Church membership in the area and will ease the heavy use of the Provo Utah Temple, which is one of the busiest in the Church. The Payson temple will bring to 15 the number of operating and announced temples in Utah.

A controversial proposal to build a Mormon temple in south Fort Collins has cleared an initial hurdle. Over the objections of some neighbors, Larimer County commissioners on Tuesday approved a plat change for a 38-acre property southeast of the intersection of Trilby and Timberline roads that would house a temple built by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In 1924, a prominent visiting Mormon envisioned a “great white temple” on the Oakland hills. Land was bought in 1943; construction started in 1956 on what is now 18.3 acres of church property. Opened in 1964, the temple is used only for spiritual ceremonies, baptisms and marriages. Sunday services are held in the neighboring conference center.
