I was fresh out of U.S. Air Force pilot training, struggling to find my place as the new guy in my first fighter squadron. All the other squadron members seemed so sure of themselves, full of energy and confidence. I wanted to fit in. I wanted to be part of the gang, a member of the club. I wanted my career to flourish. The last thing I wanted to do was make waves or highlight myself as a troublemaker. But it seemed that I couldn't escape it if I wanted to live my beliefs.

But the reality is that I was mostly avoiding the caffeine. I thought drinking it was wrong.

"It was somewhat depressing to be really close. I was like 15 days away at that point," Tanis Ukena said. "I was all packed and stuff. I was all ready to go." While Tanis Ukena is back on track to enter the MTC, he recently received a settlement one year after he was wrongfully accused of drugging a police officer's lemonade.

Last year, the World Health Organization reviewed nearly 1,000 studies and determined that "hot drinks" do, in fact, come with their own health risks. The Word of Wisdom can be a tricky topic of conversation, partly because it encompasses so much while still remaining incredibly vague. While prophets have helped clarify certain common questions about the Word of Wisdom among Mormons—such as the fact that "hot drinks" refers to tea and coffee—much is left up to personal interpretation. And as a result, that leaves plenty of room for disagreements or differences between Mormons.

Among other things, the Word of Wisdom is evidence that the relationship between our bodies and our spirits is both intimate and significant. The repeated scriptural counsel about caring for and protecting our bodies—counsel given from Old Testament times to the dispensation of the fulness of times—must in part tell us that damaging our bodies will also damage or spirits.
