5 Millennium Myths You Thought Were TrueRobert L. Millet - As I completed the writing for the book Living in the Eleventh Hour , it occurred to me that there might be some value in continuing the trek, completing the story, if you will. I honestly had not anticipated a sequel. And so the next weekend I began what might be called a review of the literature. I turned first to the standard works and was absolutely blown away by how much the prophets have spoken about the millennial period. While I was certain that much of my data would come from the Doctrine and Covenants, I was stunned by the...

These principles will form the outline of this Old Testament lesson. Once again I offer this disclaimer. This lesson is not meant to replace the one in the Old Testament Gospel Doctrine manual. Its purpose is to give some additional insights into the lesson and to illustrate with Old Testament examples some great principles taught here. President Nelson on What the Spirit World Will Be Like (+ Uplifting Messages for Parents Who've Lost Children)President Russell M. Nelson, excerpted from "The Gateway We Call Death" - This is the first in a two-part series excerpted from President Nelson's book, The Gateway We Call Death. We often speak of death as “going home.” In funeral sermons or obituaries the phrase “called home” or “returned home” is used to refer to the deceased’s state. Alma used that term in describing death in the Book of Mormon (see Alma 40:11). Because of the restoration of the gospel, we know that we are literally sons and daughters of God, the offspring of heavenly parents. We lived with them in a spirit realm before we came to earth. When he was 65 years old, Enoch, the seventh patriarch after Adam, was called by God to be a prophet. Though the Bible gives little detail about Enoch as...

How and Why One Couple Attended 75 Temples in 75 Months

But unlike most couples, they decided to attend a different temple every month. Here are some of their adventures and what they've learned attending 75 temples in 75 months. In September 2016, Rhett and Jolene Ogden got up early one morning and flew to Indianapolis, Indiana. What Similarities Are There Between Egyptian and Israelite Temples?

Meridian Magazine - "A few powerful positive themes have emerged from my study of the cultures of the ancient Near East (Egypt, Mesopotamia, Syria-Palestine, Anatolia, Greece, and Rome). One is the centrality and importance of a temple in almost every culture. Another is humankind’s relentless quest to come into contact with the divine—to enjoy communion with the gods who are worshiped and honored in temples. This desire to commune with deity in special sanctuaries is as old as Western civilization itself. And it’s also a significant desire held by the Latter-day Saints." —Andrew Skinner ( Read more of his findings on Egyptian and LDS...

3 Beautiful Memories from President Dallin H. Oaks That Helped Him After the Passing of His Wife June

Dallin H. Oaks, excerpted from "Life's Lessons Learned" - I learned what it was like to suffer the death of a beloved spouse. Others have had or will have the same experience. I share here what I learned, knowing that only some of my experiences and conclusions are true for everyone. On this subject, much is individual. When we lose a spouse, we are usually unaware of how deeply wounded we are. For a time we do not function well, physically or mentally. We should not make major decisions until we are mostly whole again. The required time will differ. For me, it was about a year before I could...

"But If Not": Finding Faith Knowing My Prayers to Be Healed from Stage IV Cancer May Not Be Answered as I Hoped

Aggieland Mormons - “Please bless that the two new spots in Mommy’s brain are not cancer.”  This most recent phrase from my eight-year-old son’s prayers tugs at my heartstrings, but also causes me to question faith.  Living with stage IV cancer is a constant battle of choosing to move forward in my own faith. How One LDS Man Turned $200 into a Company He Sold for Over $10 Million in a Matter of Months

CNBC - CNBC recently highlighted Trevor Chapman, the LDS entrepreneur who sold his company for over $10 million in a matter of months. Thirteen years ago as a broke college student, Trevor Chapman took a job selling pest control door-to-door to make extra money. Eventually, he launched his own sales operation — a solar panel installation company that quickly expanded across three states. But two years in, something was missing — and it wasn't a shortage of time spent in the office. "There came a point in time when I had to say, 'I'm in my mid-thirties, am I willing to wait until...

"Nothing Will Bless You More": President Nelson and Elder Holland Share Special Messages in Historic African Visit

Deseret News - During his global tour, President Russell M. Nelson became the second prophet to visit the country of Kenya. During his stay in the African nation, he told the Latter-day Saints, many who traveled for hours or days to see him, that tithing breaks the cycle of poverty. Elder Holland encouraged the African Saints to prepare for the temple. "Nothing will bless you more," he said, "nothing will unite your family more, nothing will bless your children more, nothing will bless your ancestors more." To listen Monday to an LDS Church president's voice in person for the first time, East African Mormons traveled...

Tribe Knew Book of Mormon Stories Before Missionaries Arrived + 4 More Facts About the Church in Paraguay

Carly M. Springer - When it rains in Paraguay, it pours. Sheets of rain turn the dirt roads of small rural towns into rivers of mud, driving everyone indoors and stopping transportation.  But around nine o’clock each Sunday morning, a small band of people trudge up flooded streets towards the local LDS chapel. Men in white shirts and ties stuff the ends of their dress pants into rain boots, bracing umbrellas against the wind. Women hold up their skirts and carry shoes in their hands and small children on their hips. Their neighbors see them pass by and think they’re crazy, and even though these...

The Scripture That Led to President Nelson's Breakthrough Discovery in Heart Surgery

LDS.org - The following was written by President Dallin H. Oaks as a special article for the May 2018 Ensign. Be sure to check out the full article to learn about President Oaks's touching first memory of President Nelson and more about this inspiring prophet of God. When Russell M. Nelson was in medical school, he was taught that no doctor should ever touch a human heart, because once a heart was touched, it would stop beating. "I Don't Know Why I'm Here": How President Ballard Healed a Woman by Following an Unexpected Prompting

M. Russell Ballard, excerpted from "Our Search for Happiness" - When faith and faithfulness are added to priesthood authority, marvelous things can happen in the lives of men, women, and families. We learn in the scriptures that after the Lord "called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease" (Matthew 10:1; see also Mark 3:14; Mark 6:7; and Luke 9:1). . . . Such great and powerful miracles of healing, restoration, and revelation righteously enacted through the authority of the priesthood occur in our day as well. May I share one...

5 Myths About Forgiveness to Stop Believing

LDS.org - “The Savior’s Atonement is not just for those who need to repent; it is also for those who need to forgive. If you are having trouble forgiving another person or even yourself, ask God to help you. Forgiveness is a glorious, healing principle.” —Elder Kevin R. Duncan Each of us has experienced the anxious, frustrated feeling of being offended or hurt. In my work as a counselor for LDS Family Services, I have found that the issue of not forgiving others arises repeatedly. Not forgiving prevents true healing. We know that we must forgive (see D&C 64:10) and that forgiveness is...
