‘I wouldn’t go back’: Why this husband and wife are profoundly grateful for their unmet healing

Two books of sacred music published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are about to undergo significant changes. An official notice has been sent to Church leaders around the world announcing a revision to “Hymns” and the “Children’s Songbook” used in worship services.

LDS golfer Tony Finau made national headlines this year after getting a hole-in-one at the Masters and dislocating his ankle in the celebration. Finau finished 10th in the Masters and has continued to make headlines as he competed in the U.S. Open this past weekend.

We speak about “excellence” a great deal, but by definition, excellence does not come easily or quickly—an excellent education does not; a successful mission does not; a strong, loving marriage does not; rewarding personal relationships do not. It is simply a truism that nothing very valuable can come without sacrifice and effort and patience on our part. Perhaps you discovered that when you got your last grades. Maybe you are also finding that many of the most hoped-for rewards in life can seem an awfully long time coming.

When we have a broken heart, we often avoid feeling the pain—whether it is a divorce, a breakup, or even a job loss. We fill our lives with busywork to get through the pain, but there’s no easy way out of those overwhelming empty feelings. We need time to grieve and accept the heartache; otherwise, it will heal very slowly or not at all. Experts recommend we go through the emotional pain, not around it. By learning to deal with these emotions, we become stronger people and more capable of handling our trials.

After Gerald N. Lund and his wife drove to Edinburg, England, to release President Stephen C. Kerr from his full-time service as a stake president, they had dinner with President Kerr and his wife, Yvonne. They discovered Yvonne was a convert to the Church and asked her to share her conversion story with them. This is her story:

When I returned home early from the mission after two months of service, I was fatigued, ill, and discouraged. I didn’t have anyone to turn to, and I didn’t know what to do next with my life.

It is important for parents and others involved with the family to help the surviving children cope with the loss of their sibling. These children can possibly be forgotten or overlooked, even though they are experiencing pain as well. Even very young children are affected by the loss of a baby and deal with the loss in their own way.
