Sometimes the heavens may feel closed. Sometimes a nap may feel more important than attending church. Both of these feelings are ones Elder Dale G. Renlund felt in his early family life, which he shares as part of the “How I Hear Him” series. Recalling an experience he had as a young medical resident, Elder Renlund knew he could have hurried to complete his tasks at the hospital and make it home for church. Instead, he chose to stall so by the time he made it home his wife and daughter would already be gone for church and he could take a much-desired nap.

What has the year 2020 meant thus far for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? Like all people everywhere, Latter-day Saints have dealt with the unforeseen and unexpected challenges of a pandemic. But what does that mean for the Church on a general level? Family sacrament meetings held in living rooms, missionaries accepting rapid reassignments and calls back home, and massive service projects like the creation of thousands of homemade face masks, to name a few things.

Continuing a series of Church leaders sharing how they “hear Him,” Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf recalled an experience he had as a 10-year-old boy in East Germany when he had a special assignment during Church meetings to pump air into the organ pipes. While the job was not easy and required that he pump with all his strength “so the organ would not run out of wind,” Elder Uchtdorf said that the job came with an additional benefit: a view of a stained glass window in the chapel that portrayed the First Vision.

If you’re like me, you have probably had someone tell you recently—or perhaps you have said it yourself—that 2020 has been a total wash. Just look at some of the major events of this year: devastating wildfires in Australia, the eruption of the Taal Volcano in the Philippines, the third impeachment trial in US history, the killing of George Floyd, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake in Oaxaca, Mexico, and of course, the COVID-19 pandemic. As Elder Jeffrey R. Holland said in April 2020 conference, COVID-19 is “a solemn reminder that a virus 1,000 times smaller than a grain of sand can bring entire populations and global economies to their knees.”

In continuation of the #HearHim video series, Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles testified that in a time of social isolation, we are not, and couldn’t ever be, isolated from the Savior.
