Not long ago, a man I know was caught in a web of lies and moral deceit. For some time, he had lived a double life—seemingly devout and committed to the gospel while at home with his wife and children, but while away on frequent business trips, he engaged in serious immorality. As a consequence, he lost his membership in the Church and began a difficult repentance process.

Often I am asked why the Latter-day Saints do not believe in the saving efficacy of the cross, yet obviously we do. We proclaim, just as the apostle Paul did, “Jesus Christ, and him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2). It’s just that our belief in the power of the cross is not well known among traditional Christians. For example, a woman in Canada asked my friend Pastor Greg Johnson how he could have close association with me and other Latter-day Saints.

In our quest to understand deep doctrine, the celestial universe, and the eternities, sometimes we overlook the simple things that are just as powerful and soul-shaping. Take, for instance, these four phrases Elder Gerrit W. Gong shared on Facebook:

It’s a Sunday morning, and I’ve just finished breakfast. I decide to go for a walk while listening to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on my MP3 player. Afterward, I shower and dress in clothes I ironed the day before. Anxious not to be late for church, I gather my scriptures and lesson materials because today is my turn to teach Sunday School. I feel prepared, but I run through a mental checklist to make sure I have everything I need. Ready at last, I set out for the chapel, greet some friends before the service begins, find my usual seat, and pick up a hymnbook.

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are commanded to partake of the sacrament each week (see D&C 59:9, 12). When the priest offers the scriptural prayer on the bread, he prays to God, the Eternal Father, that all who partake may “witness unto thee . . . that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son” (D&C 20:77; Moro. 4:3). This renews the covenant made in the waters of baptism that we will take upon us the name of Jesus Christ and “serve him and keep his commandments” (Mosiah 18:10). In modern scriptures persons desiring to be baptized are required to witness before the Church “that they have truly repented of all their sins, and are willing to take upon them the name of Jesus Christ, having a determination to serve him to the end” (D&C 20:37; see also 2 Ne. 31:13; Moro. 6:3).
