Over the weekend, two new temples were dedicated: The McAllen Texas Temple and the Feather River California Temple in Yuba City.

“After the revelation, the gospel spread out everywhere across Brazil,” Elder Soares said. “We saw many cities being opened for the teaching of the gospel, and more and more people accepting the gospel.”

Elder Soares answered a variety of questions about the name of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, his calling and responsibilities as an Apostle, the Church’s humanitarian efforts and interest in family history.

“Even though we were put here on this earth in different circumstances, we should not blame or ridicule one another because of that.”

Elder Ulisses Soares has experienced atypical Sabbath days as he has waited in the airport while on Church assignments. On one of those Sundays, he found a place where he could be somewhat alone and “closed his eyes and turned his heart to the Lord.”

The April 2018 general conference was unforgettable. Not only did the stars align so that Easter, conference, and April Fools all landed on the same day, we participated in a solemn assembly, sustained a new prophet and two new apostles, and received a few jaw-dropping surprises.

April 2018 general conference was historic as Elder Ulisses S. Soares and Elder Gerrit W. Gong were called and sustained as the newest members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. The two men bore powerful testimonies over the pulpit in the Sunday afternoon session and have since shared many valuable messages on their social media pages.

Recently, Elder Neil L. Andersen wrote an articleabout the remarkable life of our new apostle, Elder Ulisses Soares. In the article, which will be published in the October Ensign, Elder Soares's daughter Lethicia says, “When Jesus called His Apostles, He didn’t pick the most knowledgeable Pharisees, He picked fishermen. My father and mother are like that. They totally trust the Lord, and He uses them to fulfill His works because He knows they are selfless, willing to work hard, and humble enough to accept correction.” Elder Dale G. Renlund adds, “Elder Soares is an exuberant, committed, devoted disciple of Jesus Christ. I don’t know anyone who feels more keenly that he’s on the Lord’s errand. If he’s asked to do something, he does it with all his might.”

It's not always as easy as we would like to accept someone different than ourselves. But we shouldn't just accept these differences, we should embrace them.

Choosing an eternal companion is one of the most important decisions to make in this life. However, people fall in love and find their eternal companions in many different ways. Even our beloved prophet and apostles experienced times when they had butterflies in their stomachs and unrestful nights thinking about their significant others. Here are the stories of how our prophet and apostles found their eternal companions.

"It's said that the Brethren are wonderful," Elder Gong said, "but they're even more wonderful when you see them in places where they are not otherwise seen. I think if there's anything I've felt, it's been that: The kindness, the authenticity, the great faith and testimony that you see in private that goes perhaps even beyond that which you see in public."

Just before the 40th anniversary of the priesthood revelation, Elder Neil L. Andersen and Elder Ulisses Soares visited Latter-day Saints in West Africa. “The Church is growing and becoming a great people of faith and righteousness because of the good people there,” Elder Andersen said. Our prophet and apostles provide examples for us not only through what they do and say but also in what they surround themselves with.

We know the First Presidency and apostles sacrifice much to serve the Lord and members around the world, but sometimes we fail to recognize the women who travel with them, stand beside them, and sacrifice just as much for our Church. Learn a little more about the wives of the apostles.

“President Nelson walked in and his eyes were very penetrating,” Elder Soares said about an appointment he had with the prophet just a few days before conference. “He sat down in front us, knee to knee. He held my hand and my wife’s hand . . . and then he extended the call. He told us the Savior wanted me to serve as one of His apostles.”
