Health and happiness are something we all desire. Many people claim to have found the solution to lasting health and happiness and are quick to offer answers in a nice package that can conveniently be shipped to our front door. But often the results of these products and programs leave us feeling like something is missing.

Call me crazy, but I believe we can be at peace with our physical bodies. That we really can feel comfortable in our own skin. I know I’m taking a huge leap by making that statement. After all, body image statistics reveal that most of us aren’t very thrilled with the way we look. It almost seems like hating your body (or at least various parts of it) goes hand in hand with being human.

Some of us devote our lives to doing everything the instruction book outlines and then consider good feelings our right. And then we are angry when peace does not accompany our accomplishment. We may become exhausted from the effort, and still we do not have a feeling of well-being. We feel we have done our part and have been cheated.

Anyone who has a loved one who struggles with depression probably knows the feeling of trying to help them but having it seem like everything you say either falls on deaf ears or just makes things worse can leave you at a loss. I hadn’t experienced this feeling until about a year ago when a good friend of mine fell into a deep depression that was pretty uncharacteristic for them. I tried to be compassionate, cheer them up, and tell them I understood, give helpful suggestions—anything that would help them suffer a little bit less. I was at a loss and hated feeling so useless.

Many Latter-day Saints serve selflessly in their wards and stakes to fulfill their callings and Church duties. While this work is vital to the Church, it's also important to maintain a balance between serving with all our might and preserving our health. Here are a few ways we can accomplish this balance.

We all face different trials in life. But for a surprising number of children, one of those trials is cancer. Jonathan Diaz, an attorney with a photography hobby, decided to join forces with some well-known authors, including Shannon Hale and Brandon Mull, to shine some hope into some of these children’s lives by bringing their dreams to life. The finished product—a book titled True Heroes: A Treasury of Modern-day Fairy Tales—couples beautiful photo shoots with short stories written specifically for each of these special kids. Proceeds from this book will be used to bring other dreams to life for children battling cancer. Check out some of the inspiring children featured in this touching new work:
