From the Tabernacle Choir’s beautiful renditions of cherished hymns to the dazzling floral arrangements and inspired messages from prophets and apostles, what’s not to love about general conference? Since its beginning, general conference has undergone many changes and many firsts—like the first time it was only two days long or the first time it was held in the tabernacle—that have made it look different over the years. However, its powerful, revelatory spirit remains. We asked our readers what their earliest memories of general conference were and loved the responses so much that we had to share a few. Are any of these memories similar to yours?

Conference has usually been an uplifting time for me—the counsel of our Church leaders comforts and motivates my soul. I love the time with my family and look forward to the ironically named but word-of-wisdom-approved coffee cake we enjoy every Sunday morning session. It all spurs me on to a renewed commitment to live the gospel of Jesus Christ. (Except the coffee cake. All that does is remind me to eat healthier on Monday.)

I remember riding in the back of a cramped truck through the dirty streets of Santiago, Chile, en route to my very first general conference as a full-time missionary. As we navigated the small, crowded roads on our way to the local Stake Center, one senior missionary clicked on the radio which began playing a Tabernacle Choir CD. Involuntarily and instantly, I was flooded with nostalgic images and emotions of general conference back home in Idaho. I couldn’t help but wonder what my family was doing right at that very moment as they and I prepared for the same marvelous event, at the same exact moment, but in entirely different hemispheres.
