Modesty

Modesty is a tricky topic for many people in the Church. Sometimes it is a topic only taught to girls and it only focuses on dress. However, many parents have questioned that approach because we know that modesty is much more than the length of a dress or the way clothes fit. We also know that our boys need to be taught the importance of modesty as well. Modesty is not just about covering our bodies. Modesty really encompasses how we feel, think, and behave. So how can we as parents teach this deeper meaning of modesty to our young men and women?

Some of the hottest topics in Latter-day Saint culture revolve around our bodies. “Your body is a temple” is mantra repeated by dozens of youth and proper hemlines and lack of body art are vigorously scrutinized and emphasized by many within the Church. Tattoos are frequently described as a defacement of your body, a reminder of a mistake, and a potential inhibitor for serving a mission. There is an entire section in the For the Strength of Youth to emphasize modesty for women and men, explaining that “When you dress immodestly, you send a message that is contrary to your identity as a son or daughter of God.”

As Latter-day Saints, we understand that modesty encompasses much more than what we wear. It is a way of being. It is a way of understanding our potential as children of Heavenly Parents in everyday moments. It is about taking care of the divine and heavenly gifts we receive. It is a way of life.

Did you know Rosie Marie Reid used her fashion popularity to raise funds for the Los Angeles California Temple? When the Church was building the Los Angeles California Temple, Rose Marie wanted to help as much as she could. She designed a beautiful one-piece white swimsuit that was covered in hand-sewn sequins. And which hands sewed most of that sequins on? Relief Society sisters that Rose Marie enlisted to help. All the proceeds of this particular swimsuit went directly to help build the Los Angeles California Temple in the 1950s.

I love rules. I’m satisfied when I ask a question and get a firm “yes” or “no.” I had a mini panic attack when I walked into my first day of class and my professor announced that there was no rubric for the course. Then I panicked again on the last day when he announced we would be grading ourselves based on the progress we thought we made.

Among Latter-day Saint men, there seems to be an obsession with white dress shirts. Not only does every elder in the mission field sport a white shirt but so does each member of the First Presidency, Quorum of Twelve, and other auxiliary Church leadership. This begs the question: is the wearing of a white dress shirt an official standard of the Church, or is it merely an element of Mormon culture? Here’s what we know.

Kathryn is the founder, owner, and designer of Kate's Camisoles—an online boutique born in 2002 from the desire to be modest while still wearing fashionable items such as sheer and lacy tops. The idea for the camisoles was born when Kathryn saw a woman in a white, somewhat sheer top that exposed all of her undergarments. When out shopping a few days later, Kathryn realized there was nothing both classy and comfortable that would also cover a woman's undergarments. Deciding she needed a camisole made of superior fabric that was lightweight and that continued to look new after multiple wears, she set out to make exactly what she wanted. She scoured Los Angeles' fabric market, testing fabrics until she found something that wouldn't shrink, that was colorfast so the die wouldn't fade or run, and was comfortable. She designed her own patterns, had her first batch of Classic Cami's produced, and launched Kate's Camisoles.

But when I traipsed over to the Church History Library and looked through the For the Strength of Youth pamphlets from the past, I found hard evidence that it was, in fact, considered inappropriate for young women to wear pants to school and several other places.
